Chichen Itza, Mouth of the well of Itzaes, is the most famous and best restored Mayan site of Yucatan Peninsula, named after the sacred Cenote (WATER HOLE), which was used by the Mayans to bring offering of all kings to please the gods. Beside beautiful artwork, even the remains of human bodies have been found away.
One of the most significant buildings at Chichen Itza is El Castillo, dedicated to the cult of Kukulcan. Admire the plumed serpents sculpted along the stairways, which lead to the temple at the top of this almost 25m tall building. The Pyramid is actually the Mayan calendar formed in stone.
After this fascinating visit take a refreshing dip at the Cenote Ik-Kil, known also as Place of the Wings. Only at a short distance from Chichen Itza lays this beautiful eco-archaeological park, where one upon a time the Mayan Kings enjoyed the contact with nature, for meditation and rest. Discover this hidden Mayan paradise with the secret subterranean Blue Lagoon: a great spot for swimming and relaxing. Finally visit the picturesque town of Valladolid.
